Yes. Decide the floor before anything gets fastened down, and put the coating in after the ceiling and walls are finished but before the cabinets go in. That single sentence is the answer for most Austin garage projects, and the rest of this page is why, plus the handful of cases where it does not hold.

The reason is access, not preference. Coating concrete is a grinding and bonding operation, and grinding needs the whole slab, including the two feet of perimeter that a cabinet run covers up. Once a cabinet is anchored, the concrete behind and beneath it is no longer part of the job unless somebody unbolts it.

The order that works, from the ceiling down

Garage work has a natural direction, and it is downward. Every stage makes a mess on the stage below it, so the floor goes late among the finishes and the storage goes last.

  1. Anything that opens a wall or a ceiling. New circuits, a subpanel, a dedicated line for a compressor or a lift, insulation, drywall repair. Cheap while the walls are clear and expensive once storage is mounted over them.
  2. Ceiling work. Lighting fixtures, overhead rack mounting, opener changes. Drilling into framing drops swarf and insulation, and a ladder gets moved around the whole room.
  3. Wall finish. Drywall, patching, paint, and any backing needed for wall mounted storage.
  4. The floor coating.
  5. Cabinets and wall hung storage.
  6. Hooks, accessories, and the things you will rearrange for a year anyway.

The floor sits at four rather than one because a coated floor is durable, not indestructible, and it is the newest and most visible surface in the room. Finishing it after the dust, the drips and the ladder work protects it. It sits above five because of everything below.

What surface preparation needs from the room

This is the part that decides the sequence, and it is worth being specific about.

A proper coating starts with diamond grinding the whole slab so the coating has open concrete to key into, then edge grinding the last inch against every wall, then repairing cracks and control joints, then masking the base of the walls before the flake broadcast goes down. The broadcast itself throws vinyl chip several feet in every direction.

All of that assumes an empty garage. A room with cabinets in it means grinding around them instead of under them, masking them instead of the wall, and concrete dust settling into whatever is open. Crews work with vacuum shrouded tools and it is still a dusty operation. "We will coat around the cabinets later" is a different product from a continuous floor, and it costs more per usable square foot rather than less.

Wall to wall, or stop at the cabinet line

This is the real decision underneath the sequencing question, and it has a clear answer.

Coating to the cabinet line saves the material and labor on a strip of concrete nobody will see. It also fixes your layout permanently. Move a cabinet run six inches, add a section, take one out to fit a bench, and you expose a band of bare gray concrete across a finished floor. It is one of the few remodeling mistakes that is visible from the doorway.

Coating wall to wall costs the extra square footage, which on the strip behind a cabinet run is a small number against the size of the project. In exchange there is no seam, no dust trap at a coating edge, no bare patch waiting to appear, and the layout can change for the life of the garage.

Coat wall to wall. On a project of this size the saving is not worth the constraint.

Wall hung cabinets make the whole thing easier

Garage cabinets are generally either floor standing on leveling legs or hung off a wall rail. If the floor is being coated, wall hung is the better pairing and it is worth specifying before anything is ordered.

The coating runs unbroken underneath, so there is no line and no trapped edge. You can sweep and mop under them. The cabinet bottoms stay out of any water that blows under the door, which in an Austin garage is a real event several times a year. And if you ever want to change the layout, wall hung cabinets come off a rail rather than off the floor.

If the cabinets are already chosen and they are floor standing, the answer does not change. Coat wall to wall and set them on the finished floor.

Overhead racks go before the floor, not after

Ceiling work is the exception to "storage last," because it is above the floor rather than on it.

Racks, lighting and any opener change should be settled before the coating goes down. Drilling into joists or trusses drops debris, ladder feet land on the slab, and positioning a fixture is far easier in an empty room. Load the racks afterward.

They also compete with each other. A rack installed directly under the main ceiling fixture puts your bins between the bulb and the floor and makes the whole garage darker, which is why overhead storage and lighting belong in the same conversation rather than in sequence.

When the floor does not go first

Four situations genuinely change the order. Treat them as exceptions with reasons, not as evidence that sequence does not matter.

Everything you own is freestanding. Rolling tool chests, wire shelving, loose bins. These move out for a couple of days and move back, so the order is flexible and you can buy storage now without cost.

The budget is phased. If storage has to happen this year and the floor next year, choose storage that keeps the slab reachable. Wall hung or freestanding, not anchored to the floor. The thing to avoid is bolting down a run you intend to coat under later.

Fixed storage is already in. Now the choice is remove and reset, coat to the line, or leave it. Which one is right depends on how much of the perimeter is covered and how visible the boundary would be. Removing wall hung cabinets is straightforward. Removing a floor anchored run is a day of work and some patching.

The scope is not settled. If a wall might get opened, if lighting is still undecided, or if the garage might eventually become conditioned living space, do not commit to a finish yet. A conversion brings its own flooring and its own permit path, and a coating installed first is money spent on a surface that gets covered.

The permit question, settled early

Straightforward storage and finish work in a garage is generally not permit territory. Work that moves into building, remodeling, demolition or conversion can be, and the line is worth confirming rather than assuming. Settle it at stage one. A permit conversation that starts after the cabinets are hung is a bad week.

Getting the sequence decided in one walkthrough

Almost all of this is decided by looking at the actual room: what the slab is doing, what has to stay reachable, what is going on the ceiling, and where the storage wants to be.
