Under a vehicle that's driven daily, it tends to show wear, hot-tire marks, and peeling within a year or two, especially in a hot climate where tires get genuinely hot before they roll into the garage.
Two-part epoxy is a resin and hardener mixed on site, and it's a real step up. It bonds to properly prepared concrete instead of just sitting on it, and it resists oil, coolant, and abrasion far better than paint-can epoxy. Its two weak points: it can amber or yellow with sustained UV exposure (a real issue for a garage that gets direct sun through an open door), and it needs a fairly wide cure window before the floor can take traffic or a parked car.
Polyaspartic and polyurea coatings are the newer standard for a reason. They're more UV-stable than epoxy, so they don't yellow the way an epoxy floor can after a few Texas summers, and they cure far faster, often ready to walk on within hours rather than days. That faster cure also makes them more forgiving to apply in a state with the kind of temperature and humidity swings Central Texas gets, since epoxy application is sensitive to both.
None of these coatings work if the concrete underneath isn't prepped correctly. That means mechanically grinding or acid-etching the surface so the coating can actually bond, and checking the slab for moisture before anything goes down. Garage Walls and Ceiling: Regular Paint Is Fine
Unlike the floor, garage walls and ceiling don't need a special coating. A standard acrylic latex in a satin or semi-gloss finish works well because it wipes clean and holds up to the occasional bump from a bike or ladder. Flat paint will show every mark and is harder to clean, so it's worth the small upcharge to go with something with a bit of sheen.
If the drywall is bare or new, prime it first. Garage drywall is often left unfinished by builders, and paint applied straight to unprimed drywall goes on patchy and uneven.
